Virginia Rae Bennett

July 5, 1928 — November 16, 2015

Virginia Rae Bennett, age 87, passed away Monday, November 16, 2015, at Mayo Hospital in Phoenix, Arizona. She was born July 5, 1928 in Minden, Nevada to Walter Herbert and Ruth Midkiff Greene. She grew up in Carson City, Nevada where she met and married Paul Eugene Bennett in 1946. He preceded her in passing in 2009 after 62 years of marriage. They raised their family in Yerington, Nevada with a two year break spent in Anchorage, Alaska. After moving back to Yerington, she worked as a grocery clerk in the local Thrifty Market and later moved to the Yerington Post Office as a postal clerk until Gene's work moved them to Tehran, Iran. This provided opportunities to travel extensively abroad. On one of those trips they went to Jerusalem where Virginia chose to be baptized in the Jordan River confirming her faith in the resurrected Jesus Christ. After Iran they moved to Stansbury Park, Utah where Gene later retired from copper mining. After tiring of shoveling snow, they decided warmer weather was where they wanted to be. Because of their love of community and close friends, they chose Overton to be their new home. Virginia was active in her church and the local senior center. Health issues brought her to move into Las Vegas last November to be closer to family and her doctors.

Survivors include one daughter, Donna (Don) Walker of Las Vegas, two sons, Steve (Linda) Bennett of Elko, Nevada, and Gary (Pam) Bennett of Bend, Oregon, a brother, Walter Herbert (Nancy) Greene of Las Vegas, nine grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. In 1983, she began hosting family reunions that have since been hosted by nieces and nephews who still continue the tradition every other year.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, December 5, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. at the Calvary Community Church in Overton, Nevada. Flowers or donations may be made to Calvary Community Church (P.O. Box 620, Overton, NV 89040). Friends and family are invited to sign our online guest book at www.moapavalleymortuary.com
