Tommy Dean Monk, age 71, passed away Tuesday, September 4, 2012 at his home in Logandale, Nevada after a long battle with brain cancer. Tommy was born on December 20, 1940 in Roswell, New Mexico to William Lester Monk and Winnie Gladys Essary. He married Linda VanPelt on November 25, 1965 in Las Vegas, Nevada. In 1971 they moved to Logandale, Nevada to raise their family. Tommy was raised in Carlsbad, New Mexico. Throughout his young childhood he lived in Texas and Oklahoma. It was evident at an early age that Tommy had such a strong love for his country when he joined the United States Army in 1958 and entered the weapons infantry and was a paratrooper in the 82nd airborne, stationed in Germany. He was a finish carpenter and jack of all trades. He was employed at the Imperial Palace for 24 years where he was known as MacGyver. He loved to fish and garden. He enjoyed building his windmills and generating solar energy. Most of all he loved his family and grandchildren. He is survived by his Honey, Linda of Logandale, three daughters; Janie (Tom) Shakespear of Overton, NV, Laura (Walter) Respess, Cleta Gifford and one son Tommy (Amanda) Monk all of Logandale; 14 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild and 11 brothers and sisters. He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers and 1 grandson. Funeral services will be on Monday, September 10, 2012 at 9:30 a.m. at St. John's Catholic Church in Logandale, Nevada. Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. prior to the service at the church. Interment will immediately follow at the Logandale Cemetery.
