Sandra Landes, age 76, passed away on May 27th 2020 at her home in Mesquite, Nevada, surrounded by her husband Hugh and their three daughters.
She was born in Sandusky, Ohio on April 25th, 1944 to Harold Krause and Donna Kearsley. Sandy graduated from St. Mary’s High School in 1962 and then went on to become a radiologic technician after graduating from Providence Hospital School of Radiology in 1964. She moved to Honolulu in 1966, and became the Chief Radiologic Technician at Queen’s Hospital from 1969-1973. She married Hugh Landes on December 16th, 1972 in Honolulu.
In 1973, Sandy and Hugh moved to Brentwood, CA where she worked as a radiologic technician in Beverly Hills from 1974-1977. Sandy and Hugh went on to build many new businesses throughout the U.S. In 1977, Sandy and Hugh, along with Hugh’s brother Tom, moved to Lookout, CA where they developed a 5000-acre hay, grain, and cattle ranch. She and Hugh moved to Mobile, AL in 1984 where they started an architectural millwork business that manufactured mahogany doors and moldings. In 1989, they moved to Huron, OH and began a supply business for re-manufacturers of heavy-duty truck brake shoes. In 1995, they started a truck/trailer graphics business which was the first of its kind to install graphics on the sides of long-haul commercial trailers. In 2001, Sandy and Hugh started a Wild Rice marketing company which won the Dupont award; in 2003, for the best new product in Asia, Europe, and the Americas.
She and Hugh then moved to Kailua Kona, HI, in 2008 where they started a landscaping maintenance business, which is still in operation today. Sandy and Hugh moved to Mesquite, NV in 2019 where they bought a retirement home in Sun City.
Sandy lived a vibrant life and was always smiling and laughing while raising her three daughters. She was an avid athlete. She ran over 15 marathons and came in first in her age group at the Cleveland Marathon. She loved to hike, bike, and cross-country ski. Sandy loved her younger brothers, John (Barbara), Charlie (Pat), Matt, Mark (Lisa), and Harold Krause, who she saw every day when living back in Ohio. She also loved her grandchildren; Millie and Landes, and was delighted to be their “Gram.” Sandy is survived by her husband; Hugh, who lives in Mesquite, NV, and her three daughters; Cassidy Landes (Patrick McLain), who lives in Kailua-Kona, HI, Jessica Knudson (J.D.), who lives in Council Bluff, IA, and Morgan Zematis (Craig), who lives in Anchorage, AK.
Funeral Services will be private and will be held on Monday June 1st. A celebration of life will be planned for a later date. You may make donations to the National Aphasia Association at Aphasia.org.
