Royce Ficklin

Royce Conrad Ficklin, 82, passed away on July 3, 2015, in Mesquite, Nevada. He was born on June 13, 1933, in Duplessis, Louisiana, to Andrew Alfred and Philomene Ida Malbrough Ficklin. Our Dad was raised on a farm near Gonzalez, Louisiana. He was proud of his Cajun roots. His favorite memories as a child came from spending time with his family. When he was 18, he enlisted in the Navy during the Korean War. He had the opportunity to transfer into the Navy Seabees, Mob 3, to work in construction.

On Sept. 4, 1958, he married Dorann Thorpe in the Salt Lake Temple. He was part owner of Southern Hardware for 23 years. He worked for the LDS Church as a Field Rep for Southern Nevada and Northwestern Arizona. In 1988, he developed and implemented the new custodial program. This program made it possible for the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to save millions of dollars to build more Temples. He retired from Shepherd Eye Center after 10 years due to health concerns. They were residents of Las Vegas, Nevada for 53 years.

Our Mom and Dad loved spending time at their cabin he built in Pine Valley, Utah. They were long time scholarship donors and attended all UNLV Basketball and Football games. He was an active member of the Church of the Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving as Elder’s Quorum President and on the Stake High Council.

He is survived by his loving wife, Dorann (Thorpe); his five children, Dale (Judy), Don (Devri), Daryl (Melissa), Wayne (Anne), and Diann, 19 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren, his brother Enessy (Laraine). He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Fred, and a grandson, Colton Ficklin.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 11, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. at the Mesquite LDS 5th Ward Whipple Chapel. Visitation will be from 9:30-10:30 that morning in the Relief Society Room. Interment will be later that afternoon at the Pine Valley Cemetery in Pine Valley, Utah.
