Philo Jay Sylvester

July 26, 1937 — October 24, 2010

Philo Jay Sylvester, age 73, died Sunday, October 24, 2010 at his home in Las Vegas, Nevada. He was born July 26, 1937 in St. George, Utah to Horace Greeley and Virginia Lee Sylvester. On September 11, 1965 he married Melba Knight in the St. George LDS Temple.

Philo grew up Mesquite. He served a mission in the New England States Mission. He raised his family in Pahrump, Nevada working as a tire man at the Nevada Test Site. He had a great impact on his sons and many other young men as he served as a scoutmaster for many years. The Boy Scouts of America recognized his efforts by awarding him the Silver Beaver. He enjoyed camping, dutch oven cooking, small animal husbandry and deer hunting with his family. He will be remembered as a man with integrity that loved his wife, children and serving others.

Survivors include his wife, Melba of Las Vegas; three sons and two daughters: Stacy of Hurricane, UT; Shane (Audrey) of Las Vegas, NV; Phillip (Katie) of Midvale, UT; Tina (Shane) Pheasant of Las Vegas, NV; Cindy (Stewart) Gorwill of Las Vegas, NV; 16 grandchildren; one brother and two sisters: Clara (Grady) Crabtree of MS; LaVell (Dixie) of OK and Hortense Struss of MS. Philo was preceded in death by his parents and one granddaughter, Shalaina.

Funeral services will be Friday, Oct. 29, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at the Desert View Ward Chapel, 4340 Warm Springs Rd., Las Vegas, Nevada. Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. prior to services at the chapel. Interment will follow in the Mesquite City Cemetery at 3:00 p.m. under the direction of Virgin Valley Mortuary.
