Norman Grant Swanson

June 15, 1935 — February 9, 2021

Overton, NV

Norman Grant Swanson, 85, passed peacefully to the next life from complications due to Alzheimer’s disease. He joined his lovely wife who preceded him in death, on 9 February 2021 surrounded by his family. He was born 15 June 1935 in Hansen, ID at the home of his grandparents to Wilbur and Florence (Stanger) Swanson. In December of 1954 Grant enlisted in the United States Army where he served in Germany and was honorably discharged in November of 1956 as a Private First Class. He often talked about this time and the platoon he served in with fond memories. He loved people and would spark up a conversation with anyone anywhere at any time. He was passionate about the outdoors and particularly fishing. Often he could be found sitting at HIS rock waiting for that perfect trout to bite.
On 5 October 1957, Grant married Nila Rae Pennington in Fallon, NV. Together they had three children. After eight years, they parted ways and he married Nancy Jean Rose in 1966. Eventually differences would result in divorce in 1973. At an unexpected turn, a cute little blonde with five children of her own named Patricia Belle Slack came in and swept him off his feet. The two families became one. They were sealed in the Los Angeles Temple on 15 March 1975. Grant and Pat remained married for 47 years until her passing in June 2020.
As a young boy, Grant moved often. Eventually he moved from Reno, NV to Las Vegas in 1969 where he raised his children. He retired to Overton, Nevada in 1996. Grant was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints for much of his life. He loved serving in the church in many capacities, but he will be most remembered for his service as a Scout Master. He loved the outdoors and in his later years took up creating handmade canes. He enjoyed sharing and gifting his canes to anyone he thought could benefit from them. Grant, or as he often referred to himself as, “Norman the Stormin’ Mormon” was always willing to help someone in need, especially those of his ward family and neighbors. He touched so many lives and has left lasting memories to all who knew him. Survivors include his seven children, Karen (Guy) Schiessl, Lori Riggs, Michael (Katrina) Swanson, Michael (Janiece) Swanson, Shannon (Will) Nevil, Daniel (Madalyn) Swanson, and Thomas (Maria) Swanson, and his adopted daughter Donna (Daryl) Forrester. He left behind a legacy of 23 grandchildren, 40 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild.
