Melvin George Brooks

March 27, 1916 — June 10, 2017

Melvin George Brooks, after an amazing 101 years in this world departed for a better one on June 10, 2017 in Mesquite, Nevada. All who knew him will miss his wry sense of humor, his fishing and hunting stories, and his presence at the Virgin River Bingo parlor.

Mel was born in Hinton, Oklahoma on March 27, 1916 to Lewis and Dalia Brooks who later moved the family to Doniphan, Missouri. He married Verdie Robinnette and became the father of Jim, Jerry, Phyllis, and David. During World War II, he served in the Navy and was honorably discharged in 1945. The family moved to California where Mel spent years as a Master Builder for Fisher Construction company and where his excellent skills can still be seen in block walls, fireplaces, patios, and brick houses throughout the country.

Moving to Rush Valley, Utah in 1970 with his second wife, Audre Austin, and later to Overton, Nevada, Mel enjoyed retirement continuing to build fireplaces, hunt and fish, and play bingo in Mesquite, Nevada. After Audre’s passing in 2001, he moved permanently to Mesquite spending his last years enjoying life in this beautiful, desert-like community.

Mel loved his family and will be greatly missed by his sons (his daughter, Phyllis, preceded him in death), his daughter-in-laws, Christine, Samantha, and Wendy, and numerous grandchildren, and great grandchildren who will miss his love, his entertaining stories, and his shared adventures, especially when fishing the waters in Alaska. Audre’s children: Sharon, Pat, Betty, Shirley (deceased), and Marilyn are still a presence in his life and share in his loss. Audre’s grandchildren and great grandchildren will always remember Grandpa Mel. Laura Burrola, his friend, caregiver, and "adopted" daughter will never forget his kindness and love.

Cheers Mel! We’ll toast you with a glass of your favorite Merlot, pet your dog, Tanner, and see your energetic smile as we all listen attentively for B15 on your bingo card.

A Graveside Service will be held on Monday, June 19, 2017, at the Lehi City Cemetery, Lehi, Utah at 12 p.m. mst. The family invites you to leave a message or memory in their "Guest Book".
