Mary Yamashita, age 87, died Saturday, July 6, 2013 at St. George, Utah surrounded by her family. She was born December 17, 1925 in Idaho Falls, Idaho to Seikichi and Hiro Sato. She was raised in Ammon, Idaho where she was valedictorian in high school.
On January 24, 1948, she married Kiyoshi Yamashita in Las Vegas, Nevada. They then made Overton, Nevada their home. They were later sealed in the St. George Temple on December 21, 1963 along with their 4 children.
She raised her family in Overton. She was employed by the Overton Power District as a bookkeeper in 1969 and continued to work there ultimately becoming the office manager. After over 20 years, she retired from the Overton Power District with grateful wishes from her friends and associates there.
A member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints since January 1961, she served in many callings within the church. Most notably she was the Secretary of the Moapa Stake Relief Society for over 9 years. After the death of her husband in 1994, she served a 12 month mission to the Chicago Illinois Temple in June 1995.
She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a devoted and faithful disciple of Jesus Christ. She will be remembered for her inner strength, great faith, and love of the Savior and family.
Survivors include three daughters, Elaine (John) Mizukawa of St George, Utah; Vonnie (Steve) Oto of Tampa, Florida; and Nadine (Richard) Beaufort of Boise, Idaho; one son, Wesley Yamashita of Las Vegas, Nevada; sixteen grandchildren; thirty-two great grandchildren with two more on the way; two sisters: Kay Minaga of Chicago, Illinois, Micki Shiosaki of Idaho Falls, Idaho; two brothers, James Sato of Idaho Falls, Idaho; and Kenneth Sato of Idaho Falls, Idaho.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and two sisters.
Funeral services will be held Saturday July 13, 2013 at 2 pm at the Logandale Nevada Stake center. Visitation will be Friday July 12 at 6 - 8 pm at the Moapa Valley Mortuary and on Saturday from 12:30 - 1:30 pm at the Stake Center. Interment at the Logandale Cemetery will take place directly after the services in the Logandale Cemetery.
