Lucina Leavitt Shaner

December 5, 1920 — July 4, 2015

Lucina Leavitt Shaner was born December 5, 1920 in Mesquite, Nevada to Dudley Edgar Leavitt, and Bertha Hafen Leavitt. Lucina was the seventh of nine children. Lucina passed away at her home in Mesquite, Nevada on July 4, 2015.

Lucina married Arthur Ray Shaner in West Milton, Ohio on July 15, 1941. They were the parents of the following children: Elfreda Rae Corral (Freda), Tim Casbin Shaner, Edgar Milford Shaner, Eugene Evan Shaner (Rusty), Charlotte Shaner, Bertha Louise Packer, and Arthur Wilford Shaner. They also raised several grandchildren, and two great grandsons.

Growing up in Mesquite, Lucina had a wonderful childhood. At an early age, she learned to work hard helping her father on his farm. She helped cut and haul hay when the older brothers left town to work. Her mother taught Lucina to work hard around the house by helping her make rag rugs, crocheting beautiful afghans and dollies. Lucina had a gift of being a peacemaker in her family, especially with her brothers and sisters. She used this gift when raising her own children. One of her children said, "she was the most unselfish person in the world, she was the best". Lucina felt the most important lesson she could give to her children and grandchildren was to learn to love God, country and family.

Lucina lived most of her life in Mesquite, and had the opportunity to watch many changes occur during her 94 years of life. She reflected often on memories she received from her friends and family and held them dear to her heart. She loved her family, and would always encourage them to withstand the tough times in life. She loved to visit with her family, the more family she had in her home the happier she was. She was known by friends and family for her contagious laughter. Lucina never complained about her problems, she was always, "just fine". She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She was proud of her heritage, and had fond memories of her grandparents.

Lucina was preceded in death by her spouse, Arther Ray Shaner; two of her children, Charlotte Shaner and Tim Casbin Shaner; seven grandchildren, and one great grandchild; parents, Dudley Edgar Leavitt and Bertha Leavitt; brothers, Ruben, Wilford, Royal and Archie Leavitt; sisters, Violet Jennings and Lettie Leavitt. She is survived by her children, Elfreda Rae Corral; Edgar Milford Shaner; Eugene Evan Shaner; Bertha Louise Packer (Lonnie); Arthur Wilford Shaner (Mary); 25 grandchildren; 65 great grandchildren; and 13 great great grandchildren. Lucina also has two living brothers, Howard Leavitt of Cannonville, UT, and Harry Leavitt of Bullhead City, AZ.

Graveside services will be held, Tuesday, July 7, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at the Mesquite City Cemetery. There will be a viewing from 8:30-9:30 a.m. at the Virgin Valley Mortuary.
