Kirk Edward Brotherson

October 26, 1941 — August 4, 2012

Bunkerville, Nevada - Kirk Edward Brotherson, 70, passed away Saturday, August 4, 2012 at his home in Bunkerville, Nevada after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. He was born October 26, 1941 in Castle Dale, Utah to William Napier Brotherson, Jr. and Karen Beth Cox. He married Linda Gail Blackham on August 7, 1964 in Manti, Utah.

Kirk grew up in Boneta, Utah and graduated from Altamont High School in 1959. He was called as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to the Southern States mission from 1960 to 1962. After his mission he attended Snow College in Ephraim, Utah and Utah State University in Logan, Utah and eventually received a bachelor's degree in 1964 and master's degree in 1965.

He was a faithful member of the LDS church and served in many positions in the church through the years including: Bishop of the Bunkerville Ward (1980-1984) and First Counselor in the Mesquite, Nevada Stake Presidency (1997-2000). He also served as a seminary teacher, ward mission leader, financial clerk, high councilor, gospel doctrine teacher, temple ordinance worker, and as a counselor in two other bishoprics.

Kirk had a great love for teaching and coaching high school students. He taught science and math classes at Virgin Valley High High School for close to 40 years. He also was the principal at Altamont High School from 2000 to 2004. He was the head boys basketball coach at Virgin Valley High School for over 31 years, winning 12 State Championships during his time as coach. He also coached or was an assistant coach for boys baseball and football and girls basketball and softball. He was inducted into the NIAA Hall of Fame in 2011.

He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend.

He is survived by his wife of almost 48 years, Linda; children: Scott (Jennifer) Brotherson, Bunkerville, NV; Mike (Melisa) Brotherson, Springville, UT, Kevin (Laura) Brotherson, Meridian, ID; Lori (Mark) Barnum, Bunkerville, NV; Julie (Chris) Mudrow, Riverdale, UT; Danny (Kate) Brotherson, Orem, UT; David (Jennifer) Brotherson, Orem, UT; Sara (Brock) Sabey, Spanish Fork, UT; 30 grandchildren; brothers and sisters: Max (Deanne) Brotherson, Salt Lake City, UT; Jack (Karen) Brotherson, Orem, UT; Brent (Donna) Brotherson, Boneta, UT; Karen (Kim) Cartrette, Surprise, AZ; Genna Vee (Mel) Wolsey, Heber, UT. He was preceded in death by his father, Bill and mother, Beth.

The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to Mesa View Home Care and Hospice for the loving care and service that they provided during Kirk's illness. They would also like to thank Dr. Craig Booth who had been their family doctor for many years.

There will be a viewing from 6 to 8 PM on Thursday, August 9 at the Bunkerville LDS church and on Friday, August 10 from 9:00 to 10:30 AM at the LDS Stake Center in Mesquite, Nevada. Funeral services will be at 11 AM on Friday, August 10 at the LDS Stake Center. Interment will be at the Bunkerville cemetery under the direction of Virgin Valley Mortuary, 320 E. Old Mill Rd. Mesquite, NV.
