James Edward Whitney, age 76, passed away May 7, 2020 at his home in Orem, Utah. He was born December 2, 1943 in Overton, Nevada to Lloyd Frehner Whitney and Winona Andersen. He married Nancy Darlene Wilburn December 4, 1964. They were sealed in the Los Angeles Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, on March 22, 1979.
Jim was raised in Moapa Valley and graduated from Moapa Valley High School. He earned his Associate’s Degree at Dixie College where he played football, one of his favorite adventures in life. He joined the US Army Reserves in 1964, the same year he met Nancy. He completed his Bachelor’s Degree at University of Nevada Las Vegas. He began his career in finance in Redondo Beach, California. He retired in 2007. He had an abiding testimony of the Gospel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which led him to commit with all of his heart. His first calling was in the Young Men’s program. He was later called to be Bishop, both in the El Segundo Ward. He then served as a counselor in the California, Inglewood Stake Presidency. Jim and Nancy served a three-year Church Service Mission in the Southwest Branch, Watts, CA.
Jim is survived by his wife, Nancy, sons Mike (Karen) of El Segundo, CA, Matt (Karren) Layton, UT, John (Heather) Lomita, CA, and daughter Chrisi Hammer (Matt) Provo, UT, 16 grandchildren who called him P-Pa, his brother Mike (Mary Lou) Overton, NV, and sister Mary Beth Leavitt (Terry) Cedar, City, UT.
Funeral Services were held on Saturday, May 16, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at the Moapa Valley Mortuary of Logandale, NV. A link to the live stream is available below. The family invites you to leave a message or memory in their Guest Book.
