Mesquite, Nevada, H. Lynn Duke, age 85, passed away at his home Thursday morning April 22, 2010. He was born October 28, 1924 in Draper, Utah to Arthur Vance Duke and Eulean Garfield Duke. He grew up in Bench Creek, Heber Valley, and Wallsburg, Utah, and graduated from Wasatch High School spring of 1942. A World War Il veteran, he served in the US Navy from November 1944 to June 1946. After the war he married his high school sweetheart Loa Whiting, daughter of William Arthur and Clara [Parcel] Whiting, on August 14, 1946, in the Salt Lake L.D.S. Temple. Seven children were born to this union.
Lynn loved learning and graduated from Utah State Agricultural College at Logan, Utah, in June 1950 with a degree in Dairy Husbandry. Jobs he held were with the Deseret Livestock Company on the Utah-Wyoming border, 1950-1952, the Tikner Dairy Farm, 1952-1957, Wyoming, a sawmill (head sawyer) in Wyoming, 1957-1959, manager Of the LDS Church Welfare Farm in Las Vegas, Nevada, 1959-1965 and Hafen Dairy Farm (herdsman) in Mesquite, Nevada, 1965 until retirement in 1994.
Lynn was skilled in veterinary, dairy husbandry, plumbing, irrigation, bee keeping, and more. He also served Mesquite, Nevada, as a volunteer E.M.T. for 10 years. A patient, active, spiritual and loving man, Lynn loved to sing and dance. He was especially loved for his one-liner sense of humor, his eyebrow gestures and for his special gifts that touched each one of us. Lynn loved the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and had a fervent testimony to the end, and remained a faithful, active member of the Mesquite 5th Ward. Lynn was baptized by his grandfather in the Provo River in July of 1933.
He is survived by his brother, John G. Duke, of Billings, Montana, and his sisters Marian Johanson of Garden Grove, California Mable (Duke) Lassen of Midway, Utah, his children Brent L. Duke of Kearns, Utah, and wife Gail (Files) Duke of the home, Janlin Duke of Taylorsville, Utah, Dan V. Duke of the home, Mr. and Mrs. Dannie P. (Peggy Duke) Pratt of Escalante, Utah, Karen (Duke) Beltran of the home, Mr. and Mrs. Glenn (Regina Duke) Greenwood of Beaver, Utah, and Mr. and Mrs. Angel Servando (Polly Duke) Beltran of Beaver Dam, Arizona. He leaves 20 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, 4 step-grandchildren and 12 step-great- grandchildren.
Lynn was preceded in death by his wife Loa, an infant son, his parents, 2 siblings: Janet Duke Checketts, formerly of Ogden, Utah, and Blaine Duke, formerly of Salt Lake City, Utah.
Services were held Tuesday morning April 27, 2010 at the Whipple L.D.S. Chapel in Mesquite, Nevada, with internment beside his wife at Heber City Cemetery, Heber, Utah, on Wednesday April 28, 2010.
