Gilbert Park Travis

October 7, 1924 — October 31, 2018

Mesquite, NV

It saddens us to announce the passing of Gilbert Park Travis. He passed away on October 30, 2018 at the age of 94. He was born in Salt Lake City on October 7, 1924 to Gilbert Travis and Cleone Brockbank. He married Jewel Rose Rees on March 14, 1942. She preceded him in death after over seventy years of marriage. They were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on December 9, 1955.

Gilbert began selling newspapers at a young age on the corners of Salt Lake City during the Great Depression. During WWII, Gilbert worked at the Hill Air Force Base until he was drafted into the 8th Army Air Corps. They sent him straight to England to work as an airplane mechanic on B-17s, and served in North Africa as well until the end of the war. Upon arriving home, he began work at the railroad as a telegraph operator, and later started his own service station. Gibert and Jewel made their home in Cupertina, and La Selva Beach, CA. Dad loved walking on the beaches in the early morning, and going fishing. He loved watching college football and boxing. He was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served in many callings. His favorite was serving in the Temple. He had a love for reading and gaining knowledge. Dad worked hard his whole life to provide for his family. He was quick witted with a great sense of humor. He will be sorely missed, but we celebrate the fact that he is back with Jewel, his greatest blessing.

Gilbert and Jewel had four children; Jerry Park Travis (deceased), Judy Rose Griffin, Pamela Annette Marquez, and Anthony Thomas Travis; ten grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren; his younger brother Tom, and many nephews, nieces, and cousins.
