Jerry Straty of Mesquite, Nevada passed away on Dec 11, 2019 at the age of 88. He was born on May 3, 1931 to Doris (Weisflog) (Straty) Hayek of Hartford, WI and Stephen Straty, Phelps, WI.
He served in the US Navy from 1951 through 1955. He Married Rosemarie Zimmer on April 18,1953 until her passing in 2004.
Jerry received his BS degree in 1963 from the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee in Applied Mathematics and Engineering Physics. He received his PhD in 1966 from the University of Florida, Gainsville in Physics. He moved to Boulder Colorado in 1967 to work for the US Department of Commerce National Institute of Standards and Technology Laboratory (NIST) (formerly The National Bureau of Standards) and continued to work for NIST until his retirement.
During his career with NIST was presented with the US Dept. of Commerce second highest award, The Silver Medal, in 1990 for the design and construction of sophisticated experimental apparatus to measure non-equilibrium properties of fluids. He earned many achievement awards and is published in 14 text books and periodicals. His legacy now appears in the Smithsonian Institute, Washington, DC. In 2000 he earned a place in history with a device invented in 1967. Requested by the American Museum of Natural history and archived in the Smithsonian Institute is his work and 6 prototypes of the Straty-Adams pressure transducer.
During his time living in Colorado his hobby and eventual passion was in farming. He raised many generations of Registered Angus cattle, harvested alfalfa and tinkering with wood & metal projects in his customized workshop. He moved to Mesquite Nevada in 2004 after the passing of his wife.
He is survived by his daughter Gail K. Straty of Fort Lupton CO & Mesquite NV. Grandchildren Stacy Malone of Oberlin KS, Elizabeth Eberstadt of Frederick CO and Mary (Eberstadt) Pulciani of Westminster CO. Great Grandchildren Russell, Takota, Emma, Lucas. He is preceded in death by his wife Rosemarie (Zimmer) Straty of Boulder CO, brother Richard Straty of Alaska, sister Kathleen Straty, Milwaukee WI and daughter Lynn Straty of Lafayette CO.
Jerry will be laid to rest at Pinelawn Cemetary alongside his wife Rosemarie this summer, 2020.
