Mesquite, NV- Gerald D. Barton, age 72, quietly passed away to meet the Lord on July 5, 2013 at Dixie Regional Hospital in St. George, UT. Jerry was born on July 15, 1940 in Breckenridge, MN to Glen Barton and Esther Madsen Barton Fay and was the eldest of seven siblings. Jerry and Geni were married on July 25, 1980.
Jerry was raised in Breckenridge, MN. He joined the Navy after he graduated from high school in 1958. After being honorably discharged from the Navy he attended Wahepton, ND State School of Science and received his Bachelor of Science degree from St. Thomas, St. Paul, MN. Jerry lived in Roseville, MN where he worked for Onan Generators, Fridley, MN as an electrical engineer that was later bought out by Cummins Engines where he worked as Sales and Marketing Director in industrial generation side. He managed the entire southwest area of the United States , that included Hawaii and Guam. He worked at Onan Generators/Cummins Engines for forty-two years until his retirement in 2001.
Jerry's passion was flying, fishing, and anything pertaining to the history of WW2, the Korean War, and Vietnam. He loved to read history books. He loved Mesquite and enjoyed the small town atmosphere. He was President of several HOA's and served as President of the Mesquite Vistas HOA for 6 years. Jerry joined the Elks Lodge 2811 and was Exulted Ruler from 2010-2011. He volunteered for various community Elks sponsored events. Jerry also worked part time at the airport for a few months assisting Larry Lamieux (this he called his hobby as it was associated with flying).
He is survived by his wife Geni of Mesquite, NV; 2 sons from a previous marriage, Mark and Jack Barton of Roseville, MN; 2 step-children from his marriage to Geni, Lisa (Steve) Ekstrom of Maplewood, MN, Kelly (Amy) Bohmer of Steamboat Springs, CO; 5 step-grandsons and 1 beautiful step-granddaughter, Dylan, Carter, Ethan Ekstrom, twins- Claire and Coleman, and Patrick Bohmer. He was their "Papa Jerry". He is survived by his brothers, Lowell Barton of Mesquite, Stanley (Valerie) of Yucaipa, and sister Judy (Tom) Irgens of Williston, ND, and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Glen and Esther Barton; brothers, Richard and Ronald Barton and sister, Carol Bangs.
Jerry will be greatly missed by his wife, family and friends. He is in a better place and is free from pain and suffering from his illnesses. He is now living with the Lord in Heaven. Until we meet again my Love and My Knight in Shining Armor.
Visitation will be Sunday, July 14, 2013 from 6 - 8 p.m. at the Mesquite Lutheran Church. Funeral Services will be held Monday, July 15, 2013 at 11 a.m. at the Mesquite Lutheran Church. Interment will follow in the Mesquite City Cemetery under the direction of Virgin Valley Mortuary. The family has requested in lieu of flowers to send donations to the Mesquite Cancer Help Society.
