Evelyn Samalar
Evelyn Samalar, age 89, passed away peacefully Tuesday, December 1, 2009 at her home in Moapa, Nevada. She was born September 8, 1920 on the Moapa Indian Reservation to Frank and Grace Chemewavey Samalar.
She grew up on the Moapa Indian Reservation. As a young girl she attended Stewart Indian School in Carson City and later Sherman Indian School in Riverside, CA. After graduation, she moved to Las Vegas where she worked in the casino industry. In the early seventies, she moved from Las Vegas back to her home on the Moapa Indian Reservation.
Evelyn enjoyed collecting material and making beautiful quilts. She loved creating special crafts and gifts for everyone she loved, especially her many nieces and nephews. She was active for many years in the LDS Church, where she loved serving in the nursery.
Survivors include her two children: Michael (Valeri) Morgan of Mesquite, NV; Michele (Nathan) Lee of Moapa, NV; 6 grandchildren; eight great grandchildren and one brother, Leonard Henry, Sr. of Moapa, Nevada.
Funeral services will be held Friday, December 4, 2009 at 3 p.m. at the Moapa LDS Chapel. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the chapel. A Traditional Indian Sing will follow the services at the Moapa Paiute Tribal Building. Interment will be Saturday morning in the Moapa Indian Cemetery under the direction of Moapa Valley Mortuary.
