Einar S “Just” Hallen, 96, formerly of Westlake Village, CA and Salt Lake City, UT died in Mesquite, NV, Saturday, June 9, 2018, 8 days short of his 97th birthday.
He was born on June 17, 1921 in Barrington, Illinois a son of Raymond L and Louise Doll Hallen. He grew up in Northbrook, Illinois during the depression and in his 90’s he wrote a book about his early life, titled, A Boy Growing Up During The Great Depression .
Just was a Veteran of WWII, serving in the United States Navy. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
He married Jean D McPhie, on May 24, 1947 in Chicago, Illinois. The marriage was sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on July 18, 1981. Just gave everyone a nickname and Jean’s was CP-standing for Certain People. She passed away in 1984.
He was a genius with advertising, print and copy services and in 1960, he opened a small advertising agency, E. S. Hallen Company. For more than 20 years he provided national and international advertising with offices in Chicago, Salt Lake and Los Angeles. He was self taught in most of his skills although he did attend Monmouth College after graduating from Northbrook High School. He made a decision at age 12 to always be self employed and he followed that goal his entire life.
Just is survived by his grandchildren: Donna (Dayton) Sullivan, who cared for him during his final weeks, Stephen (Jonette) Brown, Diane J Bailey, and Sharon (Frank) Wright. Also 14 great grandchildren and many great great grandchildren. He is also survived by a son-in-law, Earl Cloward and a sister-in-law, Betty Hallen as well as nieces and nephews and their families in Illinois. He is also survived by his long time friends, Joline Panico and Rob Harris as well as long time business associate and dear friend, LeGrande Young. .
Just was preceded in death by his dear wife, Jean D Hallen and daughters Anita (Bill deceased) Brown and Rhonda Cloward. 2 grandchildren, Lynn Robinson and Kent D. Brown. Also preceding him in death were his brothers, Paul (Shirley deceased) and Elmer. A companion, Eleanor Metzgar passed away prior to Just. .
