Mesquite, NV- Edward J Powell, 85, passed away Thursday, November 7, 2013 at his home. He was born on April 29, 1928 in Indianapolis, IN to August J Powell and Julie (Ivancic) Powell. Ed married the girl of his dreams (his "Barbie doll") Barbara J Voelker on August 4, 1951 at St Joseph Catholic Church in Shelbyville, IN.
Ed grew up on the Westside of Indianapolis in "Haughville" and attended Holy Trinity Catholic Church and grade school. He graduated from George Washington High School and attended the Indiana Business College.
Ed began working for Indiana Bell Telephone in 1947. He was drafted by the U.S. Army and served in the Korean War from 1950-1952. After serving his country he returned to Bell and finished a 36 year career with Indiana Bell. He was an avid bowler and extremely proud of his 600+ series in league bowling. (In his teen years he was a pin setter for bowling legend Dick Weber). In addition to bowling he enjoyed playing golf and traveling. He retired in 1983 and 5 years later moved to McAllen, TX. In 2012 he relocated to Mesquite, NV to be closer to family.
Ed was a 4th Degree and life member of the K of C Council 3660 in Indianapolis. He belonged to the Slovenian National Home in Indianapolis. He was a member of the American Legion Post 252 in Greenwood, IN and Post 0024 in Mesquite, NV. He was also a member of the VFW Post 7385 in Mesquite, NV.
A devout Catholic, he belonged to numerous Catholic churches wherever he lived. He was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mesquite, NV.
Ed is survived by his spouse of 62 yrs, Barbara of Mesquite; sons, Joseph (Nancy) of Pass Christian, MS, Jeffrey (Janette) of Mesquite, NV, and Thomas of Mesquite, NV; 6 grandsons; Joe, Steve, Jamie, Chris, Nick and Scott, and 11 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Dorothy Manka of St. Louis, MO; brother John (Sandra) of Brownsburg, IN and sister-in-law Norma Powell of Indianapolis, IN.
Ed was preceded in death by his sons, Stephen and David; his parents; brothers, Gussie and Richard and his sister Helen.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, December 14, 2013 at 9:00 a.m. followed by a 10:00 a.m. Mass of Christian burial at St. Barnabas Catholic Church in Indianapolis. A private family interment will be at the Calvary Cemetery. There will be a Celebration of Life at the Greenwood American Legion Post 252 after mass.
