Douglas Ray Lund

Mesquite, Nevada – Douglas Ray Lund, age 87, passed away April 6, 2017 in his home surrounded by family after a valiant battle with cancer. He was born February 20, 1930 in Salt Lake City to James Raymond Lund and Alice Merriam. He was married to Annette Smith Lund on July 14, 1953 in Logan, Utah.

Douglas, the third of four children, was raised in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was a graduate of East High School, the University of Utah in accounting, and St. John’s University School of Law in New York City, New York.

At an early age, he grew to love the game of golf by being a caddy at some of the better known courses in Greater Salt Lake, including the Salt Lake Country Club. By being a caddy, it was a means for him to earn some income during the Great Depression and World War II. He self-taught himself the game of golf in his youth and soon became a well-known and respected competitor. He was a Junior Champion in the state of Utah and competed nationally. He distinguished himself winning the Utah State Open with a record round of 61 – a record that stood for many years. Doug was also the captain of the golf team at the University of Utah and led his highly competitive team to the NCAA national championship tournaments.

An opportunity to play on the PGA tour was thwarted when he was drafted into the United States Marine Corp during the Korean War. As a Marine, he served his country on the front lines in Korea. However, he also had the distinction of being the Captain of the U.S. Marine Corp golf team where he had the opportunity to compete in exhibitions against Gene Littler, who was the Captain of the U.S. Navy team and a PGA Champion.

Upon completion of his military service, Doug completed his education and accepted an invitation to become a Federal Agent with the FBI. Doug had a highly distinguished career in the FBI and served in the Field Offices of Dallas, New York City, and Los Angeles. As an agent, he raised his family in the communities of Dallas TX, Port Washington, NY, and Tarzana, CA.

Once retired, Doug resumed his passion for the game of golf spending his retirement years in the communities of Camarillo, CA, Ojai, CA and finally for the past 13 years in Mesquite, NV. During this time, we competed and won many golf championships at the local level and was loved by all for his kindness, good natured humor, and story-telling.

Doug is survived by his spouse, Annette Smith Lund. He is also survived by his two children, Sherrie Lund Schaerrer (husband – Steven R. Schaerrer) of Rancho Cucamonga, California and Sharlene Lund Dubin (husband – Michael Dubin) of Camarillo, California. His grandchildren are Sean Douglas Schaerrer of Omaha, Nebraska, Stefenie Schaerrer Stocks of Saratoga Springs, Utah, Brent Dubin of Camarillo, California, and Brittney Dubin of Moorpark, California. Additionally, Doug is survived by three great grandsons – Gavin James Schaerrer, Logan Michael Stocks, and Caden John Schaerrer. Finally, Doug is also survived by a sister, Barbara Lund Petersen of Salt Lake City, Utah.

Douglas Lund is preceded in death by his parents and his siblings Marjorie Lund Anderson and James Reynold Lund.

A graveside service will be Saturday, May 6, 2017 at the New Mesquite Cemetery at 12:30 pm located at 1362 Hardy Way. Family and friends are invited to attend.
