Dorothy J. Cockrell
Dorothy Jean, "Dot" Cockrell, age 71, passed away Thursday, September 11, 2008 in Mesquite, Nevada. Dot was born on November 30, 1936 in Covington, Tennessee to Ernest and Maudie Ervin Parker. She married Elroy "Roy" Cockrell on July 30, 1974 in Columbia, South Carolina. He preceded her in death on March 30, 2002.
Dot grew up in Covington, Tennessee, but moved to Memphis when she was 18. There she was employed by the Veterans Administration. After living in Salt Lake City for 20 years, she and Roy retired to Mesquite in 1994. Dot was an avid golfer and sports fan. She served as President of the Fort Douglas Officers Wives Club, of a bowling league and a golf league. She was a spunky, fun loving, take charge lady. Roy was the love of her life.
Dot was preceded in death by Roy; her parents and a brother, Ernest Parker, Jr. She is survived by her sister, Ruth and husband Gene Gallien of Longview, Texas; one nephew, Greg Howard and his daughters, Morgan and Samantha of Memphis, Tennessee; and Bogie, her beloved dog.
A celebration of life gathering is planned for Monday evening, September 15, 2008 from 4:30 to 7:30 pm at Dot's Mesquite home. All friends are welcome.
Cremation arrangements are being handled by Virgin Valley Mortuary and interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery, where she will join Roy.
The family extends thanks to all the medical personnel involved in Dot's many years of care, especially Dr. Kline and Dr. Te of St. George. And a heartfelt thanks to Sharon and Tammy.
Everyone who knew Dot and Roy will know why any memorial can be made to Mesquite Veterinary Clinic, P.O. Box 1139, Mesquite, NV 89024, to provide for animals in need.
