Delma Gubler Johnson

November 4, 1928 — June 15, 2024

La Verne, CA

Delma Gubler Johnson, age 95 passed away peacefully Saturday, June 15, 2024 in La Verne, California.  She was dearly loved not only by her sons and grandchildren and extended family but by all who knew her.  She loved people and they loved her.

Delma was born in St. George, Utah on November 4, 1928, the second daughter of Ernest Vernon Gubler and Opal Lorraine Alexander.  It would be but a few years later at the age of five that her mother would pass away, leaving two young girls, herself and her sister Amber without a mother.  Her dad’s family and others would help in the care of the girls for the next few years.  Her father remarried in 1934 to Bertha Shurtliff Barlow.  She brought two children into the marriage, and later they had four more children, so it became a mixed family which was an adjustment but Delma grew to love and enjoy each one of them.

Delma spent most of her growing up years in Logandale, Nevada.  She graduated from Moapa Valley High School is 1946, where she was awarded a scholarship and spent the next two years attending the University of Nevada in Reno, Nevada.  However, her education came to a halt for a period of time when she met and married Dick Arthur Johnson in 1948.  They moved to California where he was attending school and would soon begin teaching.  They had five children within six years (2nd child was a stillborn daughter). When Dick’s health started to deteriorate Delma started going back to school to get her teaching certificate.   She finished her degree and graduated from California State, L. A.  in 1966.

She began teaching elementary school in Covina, California in 1966 to help support the family.   She and Dick were divorced in 1969.  She continued teaching while raising four boys and even received her Master’s Degree in 1974.   She taught in the Covina Valley School District for twenty-seven years.  She retired from teaching in 1993 but continued tutoring students and grandchildren.  She was loved by those she taught and worked with.

Delma’s life revolved around family, friends, and church.  She loved being at home more than anywhere else. She had wonderful friends.  Her faith never wavered.  She was told she would be the ‘mother of men’ and she was that!  She always said her greatest project in life was helping her sons reach their potential.

Delma is survived by her four sons, Stanley Alan Johnson (Leslie)- American Fork, Utah; Bernard Arthur Johnson (Marlene)- Boise, Idaho; Fredric Ernest Johnson (Rosy)-Victorville, California; Ralph Evart Johnson (Diona)-Glendora, California; 12 grandchildren and 34 great grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter who she recently got to meet.  She is also survived by two sisters and one brother, Audrey Johnson and Verla Adams of Logandale, Nevada and Douglas Gubler of Pahrump, Nevada.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 am on June 29th, 2024 in Logandale Nevada at the Moapa Valley Mortuary.  A viewing will be held from 9:30 am – 10:30 that same day prior to the services.  Burial will be in the Logandale Cemetery.

The family would like to sincerely thank Moapa Valley Mortuary for all their assistance at this time and for all those that have helped in providing for this day.
