Chet Hopkins

July 27, 1917 — August 17, 2010

Chester Roy "Chet" Hopkins, age 93, passed away August 17, 2010 in Las Vegas, Nevada. He was born July 27, 1917 in Portland, Oregon to Ray and Mary Kirbyson Hopkins.

Chet served in the US Navy during World War II and was involved in all the major battles working in the fire room of a tanker. He married Cora Whitmore September 23, 1954 in Reno, Nevada, later moving to Las Vegas, Nevada. He worked a number of years in the gaming industry. In 1967 an opportunity to purchase the grocery store in Overton became available. This had been a dream of Chet's, to own and operate his own grocery store. Chet and Cora ran this store, later with their son, for over 30 years.

Cora died July 9, 1991, leaving Chet alone. While spending time at his beloved cabin, Chet met the second love of his life, Erma Poireier. Chet and Erma have been together since 1997. They share their love of their Cedar Mountain retreat.

Chet loved to go prospecting, never passing a rock that looked like it could be valuable. He also loved fishing, even when the fish were not biting. He enjoyed dancing and life in general. He will be remembered as happy and living life to the fullest.

Survivors include his loving companion, Erma Poirier, one son, Daniel (Karen) Hopkins of Overton, NV; three grandchildren: Mark (Larissa), Tanya (Craig) Willie and Matt (Jamie) and nine great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons, Kim Roy and Lynn Guy.

A brief graveside service will be held on Saturday, August 21, 2010 at 12 Noon at the St. Thomas Cemetery. Friends are invited to visit with the family Saturday, August 21, 2010 from 10 - 11:30 a.m. at the Moapa Valley Mortuary.
