Betty (Van Den Hazel) Dodenbier

November 26, 1936 — June 26, 2021

Bunkerville, Nevada

Bertha (Betty) Cornelia van den Hazel was born November 26, 1936 in Rotterdam, Netherlands to Jan and Alberdina van den Hazel. She passed peacefully on June 26, 2021 surrounded by family at the age of 84 at her home in Bunkerville, Nevada. She was the 5th of 6 children. She and her siblings, Jan, Joyce Al, Diny, Ben were raised in the Hague and Utrecht, Netherlands during World War II. She was a caretaker for some of siblings beginning as a young child, especially her older sister Diny. This carried on throughout all her life. She came to Zion (Salt Lake City, Utah) on the ship ‘Sibajak’ in August of 1955 where she lived with her sister Joyce. She met the love of her life, Joseph Dodenbier after a choir performance at ZCMI. They had traveled from distant lands to meet, only living 37 miles from each other in their native land of Holland. They were married on June 21, 1957 in the Salt Lake Temple. They followed the commandment to multiply and replenish the earth bringing 12 children into the world.

Joe & Betty moved to Nevada in 1962 and made it their home. They lived in Overton, Las Vegas and finally settled in Bunkerville. With great pride she became an American citizen in 1966. They raised their children valiant in the gospel. Betty found great joy in her children and family. Her parents moved to Zion in 1978 and moved next door to Betty in 1982 where Betty began the care for her mother, father and sister, Diny. This care was such a great example for her posterity.
Betty served in many callings in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she learned at the feet of her mother how to serve others and have faith through that service. She loved her time in the temple as a worker for 20 years. To this day she loved and treasured her temple friends those at the temple and those who she rode with her weekly.  Joseph and Betty served 2 missions, first in the West Indies Mission and then in the Netherlands, utilizing her native tongue on both missions.

Survivors include seven daughters and three sons: Diana (Bryce) Frehner; Donna (Bevan) Reber both of Mesquite, Nevada; Denise (Ray) Whittier of Enoch, UT; Darryll (Janet); Darlene (Mike) Lister both of Bunkerville, NV; Daniel (Laura) of Broken Arrow, OK; Dina Bowers of Mesa, AZ; Daphne (Scott) Storie of Cedar City, UT; Deborah (Karl) Mulitalo of Bunkerville, NV; Dale of Cedar City, UT; 42 grandchildren, 44 great grandchildren. Blessed art thou Mother
Of our children favored of the Lord,
With a spirit so free
Maybe we are already in Heaven
Don’t you agree.
