Anette (Smith) Lund

Annette Smith Lund, 89, passed away peacefully at the home of her daughter, Sharlene Dubin, in Camarillo, California, on July 2, 2021. Annette was born on July 19, 1931, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Andrew Delbert and Olive Crane Smith. Annette learned to read under the tutelage of her mother. With this advantage, she proved to be a bright and intelligent student who within six weeks of starting elementary school was reassigned to the group of students who were one year older. Annette showed an aptitude for playing the piano at a young age. She learned to play such difficult pieces of the old masters as the Warsaw Concerto and Brahms Lullaby and won a ribbon each time she entered the Utah State Fair piano contest.
The oldest of four children, Annette was 17 when her father, an attorney and trust officer, died suddenly. Annette helped her mother through that crucial period of adjustment to renew her dual elementary/secondary teaching certificate so she could raise her four children alone. At the same time, Annette, who was a freshman at the University of Utah, stopped her activities with the Utonian Yearbook and Angel Flight in order to work part-time at ZCMI and at the same time follow in her mother’s footsteps by majoring in home economics. Annette achieved many honors of distinction at the “U.” She won the junior division of the Utah Wool Growers Association annual contest with her expertly sewn dress and won the senior division the next year with her beautifully tailored suit. She was named president of Oma Chrome Nu during her junior year and the Most Outstanding Student in the Home Economics Department her senior year. She graduated cum laude from the University of Utah with a Bachelor’s Degree and later a Master’s degree.
Annette was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She married Douglas Ray Lund in the Logan Temple on July 14, 1953. Her favorite Church calling was playing the piano for the Primary children. Annette taught at South High School in Salt Lake City until Doug graduated from the “U” and was hired as an FBI Agent. Over the next 25 years, they were transferred to the field offices of Dallas, TX; then New York City, NY, and finally, Los Angeles, CA. In each location, Annette taught school while raising their two daughters. After Annette and Doug retired, they lived in Camarillo and then Ojai, CA, and finally in Mesquite, NV.

Annette was a devoted wife and mother. She will be remembered for honoring her parents, for having a strong work ethic and a cheerful demeanor and for exemplifying the Christ-like attributes of integrity, humility, sacrifice, and charity. Throughout her life, she gave generously to her children as well as her mother, siblings, nieces and nephews, and even strangers in need.
Annette was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and two siblings (Stewart C. Smith and Suzanne Smith). She is survived by her two daughters: Sherrie Schaerrer (Steven), Rancho Cucamonga, CA, and Sharlene Dubin (Michael), Camarillo, CA; four grandchildren: Sean Schaerrer (Sarah), Las Vegas, NV; Stefenie Schaerrer Stocks (Brandon), Saratoga Springs, UT; Dr. Brent Dubin, Vineyard, UT; Brittany Dubin Pattillo (Jonathan), Bloomingdale, GA, and six great grandchildren. She is also survived by her youngest sister, Dr. Carolyn Smith Brown (David), Salt Lake City, UT.
